Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4, 1972. The family was also dominated by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as a single child. Scott was a student at her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. After 3 years of working as teacher's assistant and studying the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. She started her career performing live poems and the work of her own. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. At the Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. While on the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable performance experience. She was the first artist to be signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
